This is a selective inhibitor of TGF-β type II/activin receptor-like kinase (ALK5), type I activin/nodal receptor-like kinase (ALK4), and type I nodal receptor-like kinase (ALK7). It inhibits Smad2/3 phosphorylation, and inhibits TGF-β induced epithelial to mesenchymal transformation. It exerts almost no effect on bone morphogenetic protein type I receptor, p38 MAP kinase, and extracellular signal-regulated kinase. Furthermore, it has been reported that when added to rat iPS cell culture medium, it facilitates uniform growth of rat iPS cells without differentiation, and can be cultivated over a long period.
